Baldur’s Gate 3 is very heavy on lore and depending on character’s choices, the story can change drastically. So to follow this particular Astarion here’s:
General wiki page on Astarion’s past
Reddit that explains generally all good endings for Astarion and companions, generally follows this for his timeline.
An outline with options to take for his Companion Quest.
- Tav learned Astarion was a vampire when he tried to drink her, she allowed him to drink and he pulled back in time before he would accidentally kill her
- Tav met Gandrel while Astarion was at camp. She refused to give him up.
- Tav tricked the Orthon to fulfill the deal to Raphael, soon him telling him of the carvings on his back.
- Ulma and the Gur gave him a chance to redeem himself, he accepts knowingly admitting he has compassion and empathy
- Tav prevented Astarion’s “siblings” from kidnapping him
- Tav convinced Astarion to not ascend, being free from Cazador but soon fated to not be in the sun soon. But he was free and kept his soul.
Personality:
Astarion was sadistic, hedonistic, and a charming manipulative individual to hide his inner cruelty he could harbor for others. After years of slavery and torment, he grew to hate heroes and the idea of compassion because no one would look at a vampire and assume he needed rescuing from a cruel man like his master. It was better to hate everyone and take advantage of everyone if it meant he could finally be free and experience pleasure without the eyes and strings of others.
That was until he met Tav.
Thanks to Tav, he learned about his capabilities to feel guilt and self reflection. To properly heal from his trauma and become the best person he really can be. He can be better than Cazador, be it sheer will of freedom and being triumphant. Then for all of the Tavs in the world, who would see beyond his vampirism and see there is a man who cried for kindness once before.
Astarion still is though, by essence, petty and sarcastic. Despite the fact he chose his true humanity over survivalist manipulation, it doesn't mean he won't take opportunities to get ahead at the expense of people who piss him off. Astarion has a sharp tongue and even sharper cunning, and he would use any charming asset he has to get what he wants. He enjoys the finer things in life (and will absolutely be over the moon as VR will halt his vampiric condition) and despises getting really knee deep in hard labor that affects his vanity. There is a very morbid sense of humor he has that hides a great deal of feelings at the worst of times, getting a reaction out of others at the best of times. Most of the time, he showcases an egotistical overconfidence, which subsequently hides the self hatred and guilt he still feels in his road to recovery from trauma.
His sensitive side is, however, far easier expressed now. Astarion values freedom and independence from others and will be sympathetic to those who have been harmed by others by it from power or circumstance. He is still a very, very charming man. Not at all immune to flirting from others or flirting back, even play teasing as long as everyone is consenting to it. Those he cherishes obviously will see this side more, and will be protective and a cheerleader for them. But he is, by in large, a pain in the ass. He's a princess and he loves being pampered, feeling he deserves to be spoiled by someone or some thing out there. Being in VR will help him really experience true freedom in well over 200 years. Rediscovering what it means to really be Astarion again.
The cruel streak is still not gone, but to bring it out means you insult him for things he can't control about himself. Or, threaten him and his allies. Then you'd probably see what a rogue who navigated in dark streets could do to you with a knife.
